Eelgrass

eelgrass plant

Eelgrass grows in large meadows in tidal waters. It can be found in a wide range of climates in the coastal United States.

This plant has leaf blades that may grow up to two meters long. It loses its leaves in the fall.

Eelgrass meadows provide vital habitats for a wide range of fish, shellfish, and other animals.

Eelgrass filters excess nutrients out of the water and helps prevent shoreline flooding and erosion by stabilizing sediments and buffering wave action.
