Coast Live Oak

Coast Live Oak

Coast live oak is the most common tree in the upland habitats around Elkhorn Slough.

It occurs in a climate that has mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers.  This tree has a wide top and reaches a height of 35-80 feet. The large branches often touch the ground.

These trees provide shade as well as roosts and nesting sites for birds and bats. The trees produce acorns, an important food source for many wildlife species, especially woodpeckers and squirrels.

The wood from this tree makes excellent charcoal and was massively harvested by European pioneers.
