Animals: Spiders

Many people fear or dislike spiders, but most are not harmful.  In fact, many spiders are beneficial because of their role as predators.

There are three things that set spiders apart from other animals: they have fangs, four sets of legs, and a cephalothorax, which is the head and the first part of the body fused together.

Spiders occur in many types of habitats and are often very abundant. Spiders are the only animal group to use silk throughout their lives. Silk is spun through spinnerets located on the back part of the abdomen. It is used to trap prey, construct retreats, and protect eggs.
